To address my second question: what if I wanted to remove linux and grub and restore the machine to Windows only? I'm thinking that I could boot a live linux CD, run gparted and reset the C drive (/sda) back to it's original size. Thank you for 'putting some sense into my head'. As for backups, my stuff is regularly stored both in the cloud, and on external large-capacity HD's. Of course Windows can't read my ext4 partition, so that's a foolish and unnecessary worry on my part. But it's always wise to assume the worst - make backups before making any major changes! A free app that I know works for backing up everything including Linux partitions, and making emergency repair boot media is Macrium Reflect Free. It would seem insane to me that Windows would modify partitions it does not have access to. Windows cannot even read the default drive format that Linux uses (Ext4). Basically, I want the new owner to turn the laptop on and go through the same process I did when I bought it, so I don't want to wipe the windows installation etc. All things remained the same except for a fresh Windows OSībaker6212 wrote:Logically I would assume no. I want to wipe it so any details of mine won't be on the laptop. I had a Lenovo Ideacentre 300s which was a dual boot with W10 and LM17. thereby effectively removing grub and mint.īefore installing LM, I used Windows to shrink the partion, then installed LM17.3 Cinnamon in the newly created unused space. I'm guessing that I can do a "live CD" boot, use gparted and resize / restore the C: partition to its original size.

#WILL FACTORY RESET REMOVE GRUB WINDOWS 10 WINDOWS 8.1#
If I select to reset Windows 8.1 to 'factory' will this remove grub? I just want to reset Windows, but not remove Mint.Ģ) If I wanted to totally remove Mint and reset the machine to "windows only", how should I do this? The installation of Mint was done using gparted to resize the C: drive (/dev/sda).ġ).
